Congratulations to our 8th Grade students who competed in the 2025 Regional National History Day Event at Cape Fear Museum on Thursday. Students have invested their time the last few months researching their topic, completing a bibliography and process paper, and perfecting their physical product, which can be a documentary, exhibit, performance, website, or paper. The theme of this year’s annual competition is Rights and Responsibilities in History.

WAAS had a very impressive day at the competition, with eight projects qualifying for the State NHD Competition in Raleigh on Saturday, May 3rd! Way to go Owls! This year, WAAS had at least one student place in all five of the major categories. The awards ceremony celebrated the top three projects in each category which included:

Individual Documentary-
1st Place- Abram Baker- Japanese Internment Camps: The Responsibilities of the
Government and the Rights of its Citizens

Individual Exhibit-
1st Place- Bentley Burton- Montgomery Bus Boycott: A Non-Violent Protest that Sparked
the Civil Right Movement

Group Performance-
1st Place- Abbie Hayes, Julia Gualdi, Harrison Lacy, Nellie Sica, Ella Yokubaitis- The Enlightenment’s Impact on the Constitution: How the Enlightenment Shaped Rights and Responsibilities Today
