Congratulations to 8th Graders Lucy Evans and Eliza Johnson for their 2nd and 3rd place finishes, respectfully, in the 2023 Mary Alice Jervay Thatch 1898 Student Essay Competition. This essay competition aims to prompt New Hanover County students from grades 8 to 12 to unravel and narrate the events of the 1898 Wilmington Massacre. Beyond recounting this significant incident, it also seeks to evaluate their capacity for objective research and emphasize the contemporary significance of this episode in North Carolina’s historical tapestry. We are very proud of your work, which will be published in the Wilmington Journal, and highlighted on the 1898 Symposium Website!
